Where do I go? South Africa of course!!! Well, at least that is where I got my market-weaver's bracelets. Madewell is now selling these for only $10. (I have to admit I bought 6 for under $20 in Africa, but who can get there on a whim?)

They are hand made in Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa. I bought them at a teeny gift shop in SA at the Waterfront!

morning work outs.

So I work out nearly every morning. (caveat-----with Aunt Anne's funeral and other dramas, I've been less diligent, but am getting back on the horse again, which started yesterday).

Now, let me just say, there are benefits to working out in the morning!!

1. You finish the worst part of your day, right at the beginning.

2. You burn calories all day long.

3. It helps you wake up.

4. You actually did the work out, instead of possibly putting it off.

5. Working out increases mental acuity, so you're more alert throughout the day.

6. Work out in the morning, and be less likely to eat crappy, greasy foods the rest of the day.

I do realize there are some negatives to working out in the morning!!!

1. O-m-g I have to get out of bed at what time?! I get it. It's tough. If you get up the same time every day (I get up at about 5:40), it'll get easier and easier.

2. Getting up early (It deserves two spots).

3. Getting to work later (I get in between 8:30 and 9, which means I work through lunch, or stay later).

4. Sweating for that first hour you get to work. Now I don't think this happens to everyone, but it does to me. My heart rate keeps pumping (plus add in the coffee) and causing me to sweat for a little while.

But seriously...if I leave my work out until the evening, I might as well kiss it goodbye. I'll find a happy hour, or a nap, or an errand to replace it within five seconds. Occasionally I work out in the morning, and then take another class or yoga in the evenings to get me extra tired so I sleep like a baby.

Also...who doesn't love cute work out clothes? Sometimes I splurge on Lululemon work out clothes (I love these pants, these, and these tanks), but Target has my favorite sports bras and tanks.

Things that make me smile today.

1. This jam, sent to me by DailyCandy. I have to get my hands on Miss Eliza.

2. Ava Witherspoon---seriously how adorable is she!? I was reading about them in the U.S. Weekly while enjoying some coffee this am.

3. Let's go ahead and make that #3 on the list...coffee. Coffee gives me that morning jolt I need to open my eyes a little bit wider (even though I endure 60 minutes of work out before it). It also makes my heart race just a bit so I plow through a few hours of work right in the morning.

4. A couple of Tumblrs I've tumbled upon (wah wah). First off-what they hey is a tumblr?! I'm working on figuring that out just yet. Nonetheless, the unofficial JCrew tumblr is fab (appropriately named 770 after their corporate store), as well as this tumblr called cognac and coffee (yes please).

I think that sums up my loves for the day..that is until I start perusing the Internet and that list continues to grow.

That is what Aunt Anne always calls me, her name sake. My dad is an only child. He was raised by his mom (my fabulous, rockin', 84 year old, bingo playing, and jogging grandma), 2 aunts, and his grandmother. Up until yesterday, one of these aunts was still living. Aunt Anne died at 98 years old (her birthday is on Valentine's day, and it couldn't be more appropriate) yesterday morning.

98. YEARS OLD! I realize that means she had lived quite a full life, but the news was still devastating to us all. My grandmother called me and we sobbed on the phone. There's so much we have that is because of Aunt Anne's sacrifices. When everyone was going through school, she quit and went to work to support the family. She helped discipline my unruly father. On top of that, when my sisters and I were growing up, she spent a month at Christmas with us, and we went to visit her 2 weeks out of every summer.

Nearly two years ago was the last time I saw Aunt Anne. Now that we're grown, it's harder to get up there to see her. Here she is below, reuniting with my dad for the first time in probably five years...
Here they are having very deep discussions, as usual. She is the most wise woman you've ever met. She has more life experiences than anyone I know. She could also drink anyone under the table through her 80s :).

One of my cute little cousins wrote this about her. The beatitudes are a set of eight blessings contained in Matthew's gospel.

When Aunt Anne greets you, she always says "God love you, honey!"

Here is where we come from. In the bottom center, my great grandmother Tarooz and my great grandfather Elias. One of the children, my Aunt Maheb, is missing in the photo because she is the oldest, and never came over from Lebanon. At the time, you were only allowed to take one child with you on the boat, and Aunt Anne was a baby (and the second oldest) at the time.

Aunt Anne is the second from the top left. My grandmother is the bottom left, next to Tarooz. From this photo, only my grandmother, Uncle Joe (the man wearing that pimp suit!), and Aunt Lateefa (top right) are living.

Here she is again, notice her love for neon green. I think that's where I got my obsession for neon and bright colors!! My dad said recently that they named us perfectly. My middle sister, Virginia was named after Aunt Gina (top left in the above picture, passed away when I was 4), and they are so similar. I have grown to be so similar to Aunt Anne...always accessorizing, always in bright colors, always cheerful.

God love you, Aunt Anne! You'll be missed, but we'll carry on your legacy.

Several things. 1) I'm tired of spending a fortune on JCrew swimwear. 2) I'm underwhelmed by their offerings this year. 3) Their prices are getting higher and higher, causing you to drop $100+ instead of $60+ on an outfit that is worn only in the water!!

Start: looking for other options.

I've found two great options thus far.

Old navy! Prices starting at $10 and styles are ca-ute!

Land's End! What the what? Look how cute these suits are!! Trendy neon colors, great shapes, and cute patterns!

This DailyCandy video has me intrigued. Hat maker Eugenia Kim shows us how to make quick and easy fascinators in this short clip.

My cousin Cindy (the one in S Africa) asked me recently what I thought of "fascinators" that the British ladies are wearing lately. Being that I am a maker of headbands and hair pieces, I'm obviously a fan of head wear in general. Lately I haven't been wearing much more than a bun on top of my head, but the upcoming nuptials might be an occasion to change that.

Kate Middleton is a frequent wearer of these feathers, and keeps it classy and fairly simple.

Inspiration can also be taken from SJP, and she definitely isn't afraid to go the extra mile!

So you remember my condo revamp right? It stems from purchasing the couch.

My roommate and I were drawn to the frame hanging frenzy on Young House Love (see it here) and are trying to recreate it at my place. After weeks of magazine tear outs pasted on the wall...to random frames...and now to this, everyone had their doubts (and voiced them!!). I do think it turned out nicely so far, don't you? Still a few mats left to buy and that upper space on the top left leaves me wondering how to fill it...any thoughts?

(sorry for the low quality phone pics..was in a rush to get out the door this am!)

This is a quick and clean painting I did myself. Sometimes, if you've got a simple idea, it might be easier (and cheaper!!) to do it yourself. The goal was to also tie into that pink/salmon color of some of the couch pillows (seen here).

The project is not complete...I think we need more frames to get it nice and tight on the wall. But, as with most things, it's a gradual process of accumulating pieces I love and getting them a spot on the wall.

Climbing back out...

Out of the blog vacation...out of the shadows...out of the cobwebs.

Why a blog vacation?

-If I'm being honest, I really took a "social network" vacation. In order to decipher the meaning of this, let's define the terms.

social network: a social structure made up of individuals (or organizations) which are tied by one or more specific types of interdependency...such as common interest, ... dislikes, .... beliefs, ...or knowledge.

vacation: a leave of absence from a regular occupation...

We all get caught up in the intertwined networks of the internet. Facebook, blogging, celebrity gossip sites...checking out old friends' pictures, making comparisons of the "picture perfect" display to your own life.

But wait...why should we compare to other peoples' online portrayal of their lives to our own true life? That's not right..anyone can make their life look seemingly perfect and effortless on the internet...but what you must realize is that we all have flaws, shortcomings, and imperfections in our worlds. Sure it's not necessary to focus on the bad, but it's not very truthful to only show the good.

Taking a step back has helped me refocus my energy on my own life, instead of on my positive portrayal of my life, or how others perceive my life. My life is great! Great job...great friends...great family (and cousin)...great home...great bf...and not only that, but I have two hands, two feet, 10 fingers, 10 toes, and a strong will to get things done and make a difference bit by bit.

Be calm, be at peace, be content. This is what I will hold onto as I jump back into the social relm.

I have a bit of a wish list going, once I saw that JCrew had new arrivals.. I can't help it really. It all looks so appealing...is it because I can't shop? Is it because the sun is shining and the temperatures are rising? Could be a little of both.

Regardless, here is what I would put in my imaginary cart, if the sky was the limit. Sigh.

1. Stripe sunburst tank-love the wonkiness of those stripes! And of course any stripes in general.
2. What a cute laid back cardi, Sabrina!

3. Crochet is not just for grandmas. This is totes hot.

4. Remember how I said I wanted to get in on the motorcycle trend? Hel-lo what better way to do it than with an exposed zipper!!!!

5. I do love a good gingham.

6. I'm intrigued by these shorts...too poofy? Or just plain cute!

7. And the lace/eyelet trend. Don't even get me started on these babies.

I came across this recently ( I don't remember where ) but once I saw it, Julie and I began obsessing over it. I have been on the hunt for the basic tote. canvas or linen bag, leather handles. These straps are adjustable, and at such a low price!

Since I gave up shopping for lent (kill me), I haven't ordered one yet. Julie got hers in the mail recently and it couldn't be any freakin' cuter!!

I thank the 80s for these bright hues, but I'll gladly leave the rest of the 80s in the past and try to wear these shades in a more classic way...a simple cardigan, a sassy shoe, a necklace or two...

Well this post has nothing to do with Charlie Sheen (sigh of relief), but everything to do with the Super Moon hitting your local sky March 19th.

Read the story here, but the gist is that the moon will be a mere 356.6 thousand miles from our natural satellite, which "in terms of space distances is just a stone's throw away".

I'm no science nerd, but I plan on seeing this Super Moon. And I will admit that it reminds me of that scene in Bruce Almighty when Jim Carrey pulled the moon closer for Jen Aniston

New Couch

It only took me a few months to post pictures of my new couch. These things take time! By now she (the couch) has settled in nicely. With fantastical ikat pillows from World Market, an old quilt from mom, and some funky lamps (red tall one from Ikea, clear one with red cord from CB2), the couch feels right at home.

Remodel.

So, pardon the iPhone photos, but something exciting is going on in my condo!!! My uncle tore out the wet bar (it was pretty wretched looking, and poorly constructed) and we've picked out tile and sink/faucet so far for the re-installation. He'll be making a new cabinet, and new shelves.

To say that I was running late today is a bit of an understatement, gov'na! (best line from Easy A). Our travels back from Capetown were challenging to say the least, and I spent yesterday un-burrying myself from emails and phone calls.

Remember my post yesterday about meeting Ree?? Well I didn't know I'd get to meet the whole fam! (they were present, but I did my best not to stalk them all).

Even Marlborro Man was there (real name Ladd Drummond), signing books as well. His line was very popular as you can imagine. My friend Mandy said "what should I say to him?" and I jokingly replied "Hi, you have a nice butt" since that's mostly what Ree posts of him.

All in all, a successful evening out to get our books signed and chat in line with people who stalk Ree incessantly as well (or even worse!)

this is an over-used phrase in my vocabulary at the moment. sometimes i just reply with a quick "totes" for short...last night my roommate found a brand of tote bags called totes mcgotes!!!! how funny!

according to urban dictionary, totes mcgotes means:
-totally; the only appropriate response for when someone asks you to do something ridiculously cool; the cool way of saying 'totally'.

don't you love this phrase!? that's really all i've got for you, today, seeing as we got piled with more snow last night..totes.

I looked all the way back to my second ever post (first with pictures-including the several pictures of the shoe contents in my closet pre-shoe off***) where I wore the ever popular Steve Madden Intyce boots.

Sad news? I've worn through them. Had to give them up. They've lasted 3+ years and 2 trips to the cobbler, but now it's time to say goodbye.

Something I usually don't do is buy something twice..but I made an exception here, sort of. I bought the same boots, but in wine red! Check them out..cute, right?

**The shoe off is what started this whole sha-bang of the Daily Anntidote. In an effort to clean out my closet of shoes, I wore a different pair daily and subjected them to a vote by the readers of this blog. It started out as a couple votes a day (thank you sisters and cousins) but spread to anywhere between 50-80 voters a day! Voters chose "keep" or "toss" and I stuck to what they said, eliminating nearly 1/3 of my collection to consignment or charity. I decided to keep blogging once the 60+ day challenge was over (that means I had 60+ pairs of shoes!!!!!).

Emma Stone is completely inspiring lately. She has grown up and transformed into this gorgeous blond goddess...

I love the geometric shapes and neutral colors in her outfit below. She's bringing back the 2010 color Endive in the skirt and channeling Pantone's 2011 Spring colors in the soft blush of her cheeks.

Really.......I think I'm just ready for Spring. I'll get a taste of Summer in a few weeks when I head to South Africa and I can hardly wait!!!

Blunt Bangs

I like blunt bangs..do you? I have bangs..my adorable hairdresser Johnnie at Toni & Guy gave them to me around a year ago on a whim. I look back at pre-bangs pictures and I'm like, "who is that girl?"

You know what else I love? These two products. Virginia and I went on a Sephora outing post Christmas due to a gift card found in our stockings (thanks Dad!!!). We had the most awesome sales lady help us pick out these too for a little more relaxed, little less rigid look to the locks.

-the styling lotion de-tangles and smooths. I spray it in before air drying or blow drying.

-the surf spray makes your hair a little salty...if you know what I'm saying. I usually don't like it when my hair is "too clean" so it dirties it up just a little bit to give you some nice body.

I highly recommend these!! Plus they smell great. That same day I bought the best ever anti aging/forehead wrinkling already/moisturizer in the planet. Then I told Uptown Girl about it. We love.

And then I found $10.

Well I didn't, but I thought it might make the story better.

Finally pulled the plug and got a new ceiling lamp for over the dining room table. I've only been wanting to do that for over a year and a half!!!

Madewell Spring line-I die. Fantastic shoes, and I have my eye on three pairs. I'll have to either a) narrow it down to one (not likely) or b) convince my roommate to get a different one than me so we can share.

This inspires me to create some funky Spring looks (especially when the temps dropped yet again and we're stuck in Winter longer).

1) The Oxford slingback, black and cream tunic, and simple khaki shorts.

2) The nubuck seaside sandal, hippy colorful top, and flirty navy lace shorts.

3) the sidewalk wedge, the sweater of many colors, and how about some basic leggings?

Love Scott's work. Always. But this outfit is a new fav.

This madman's method is how I dress myself most days. I try not to worry too much about matching or coordinating.

I actually hate it when I match too much! Grey, brown, blue-throw it all in! I love his yellow socks, denim shirt, and the spotted scarf. What I love, is that he seems to be dressing for himself. Not for attention (it's not like he's wearing a stop sign!) or praise. I think that's how your look should be...for yourself, not for others. Take some risks, take some chances, but don't put on a costume every day.

The world of fashion is a balancing act...wearing the trends while keeping true to yourself and staying simple. Don't sweat the small stuff.

Of course it is. It's Anthropologie...who can readily afford items at this place? I admit I'll buy one or two pieces here and there...but a $1,000 quilt? No way!

Ok, I'll calm down. Fred Shand is who is profiled currently at Anthropologie for his amaaaaazing quilts and pillow creations.

How striking and unique is this bed quilt!? I would fold it at the end of my couch if it were me.

I've got my mittens on today. Wore them on the way to yoga..(note I have the black & white ones)
So I'm getting into the first downward dog and do you know what I realize? My pants are on inside out. Perrrrrrfect. Well, the room is dimly lit and you're SUPPOSED to only be paying attention to your own practice, so I decided to let it go and stick with them as is. And you know what? After a while I forgot all about it.

These mittens are totes cute and warm, grab yourself a pair!! As a side note, I had the most amazing breakfast smoothie (which Julie will vouch for me here). Want to know what's in it? Ok!!

This morning I was all "what should I wear?" So I put on my favorite skinnies (ahem, Target) and stood there peering in my closet. You know the days where you don't even have a thought of what you want to look like?

Well that was today. So I went online to Madewell and I saw this:

So I thought "Ya, I'll wear a belt!" Then I put on my fantastic orangey-silky blouse tucked in which really pops against the dark denim.

I thought "Ya this is working!" and was watching Honey while sipping my coffee and finishing hair/make up (wish I had a stylist to help with that).

Then I spilled coffee down my orangey-silky blouse.

Super.

Pulled it off (actually, quite quickly due to those little snaps!) and threw on a navy tee.

Oh well, at least it's Friday! Will be making my third stop at the cleaners this week.

Soo....lots of random things going on here. I went to Target with my cousin last weekend and found some really great jeans...seriously! I think I'm converting to Target for skinny jeans. I believe these are them...but to me they seem a shade darker, so I'll continue searching. How can you beat that price!?

I also scored some William Rast jeggings in black. As in, William Rast has a line for Target! Pretty pumped about that.

In other news, I'm completely ecstatic about cleaning out this weekend and getting ready for my new sofa. We're in the process of getting rid of some excess and re-arranging other things. I thought it would be a good time to pick up the rug under the dining room table and vacuum..how often do you get to do that anyway? You'll never believe what we found underneath...nearly a year's supply of hair ties, bobby pins, and q tips that Calvin (cat) had taken from Alicia's room and stuffed under the rug day by day....

How funny is that!? There was much more, I can assure you.
